The Friars of the Sick Poor of Los Angeles, is an Association of the Christian Faithful. We live, work and minister to the sick-poor and the marginalized within the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. We are a community of Diocesan right. The community of the Friars of the Sick Poor was erected by decree in April of 2002 by Cardinal Roger Mahony, Archbishop of Los Angeles.
We are a contemporary community of friars, who are drawn together out of compassion and love in service to the sick-poor and marginalized, in imitation of Jesus in the Gospels.
Our charism is to assist others to find meaning in their suffering and sickness, acknowledging it as being redemptive and inviting them to a fuller life within the church. We are called to advocate on behalf of our brothers and sisters, who often cannot speak for themselves.
The Community
is under the patronage of Our
Lady of Guadalupe, finding confidence in the same words that she spoke
to St. Juan Diego,
"Am I not here who am your mother? Are you not under my shadow and protection?
Are you not in the crossing of my arms? Is there anything else that you need?"
